Invention Education Mentor

Anticipated Wage: $15/hr

Support youth and travel around Oregon as an Invention Education Mentor!

This recruitment will be used to fill 10-12 full time positions (when programs are in session), that are referred to as Invention Education Mentors. As an Invention Education Mentor, you will be trained during the Spring 2022 to support three Invention Education programs. You will be trained to support each program, and may be asked to cover for other mentors on the fly (e.g. emergencies, availability, out sick, COVID, as residential programs wind down and summer camps are ongoing, etc.). Programs run from Spring Term to Sept 2nd. Mentors are required to have a valid motor vehicle license and have it remain in good standing for the duration of the programs. Passing a motor vehicle check will be required.

Mentors are responsible for attending training during the spring term, altering and delivering lessons that engage students in invention education. Mentors will run all program related activities across, Summer Camps, Residential Programs, and the Youth as Inventors Program (e.g. check-in, morning updates, am/pm snack, invention lessons, closing camp, etc).

Invention Education Mentors will gain the experience of running and leading invention programs throughout Oregon, providing valuable job experience, professional development, and an opportunity to travel through the beautiful Beaver state.

Invention Education Mentor Programs

These are 4-5 day summer camps that take place away from Oregon State University along the Oregon coast, Willamette Valley, and Eastern Oregon. There will be 11 summer camps between June 20th and Sept 2nd. There will be in-person training June 13th and June 14th. Mentors are expected to work 40hrs per week while camps are in session. Mentors will be provided a van to commute from OSU to close by camps (e.g. LBCC), and a van, lodging, and per diem for camps that are further away (e.g. Eastern Oregon). When overnight travel is required, Mentors are expected to leave the Sunday before camps start, stay overnight in shared accommodations, and return to OSU Friday after camps. All mentors should be willing to drive the van to and from camps. Summer Camps average 25 middle school aged youth, 3-4 mentors per camp, and 1 on-site community host. These camps are designed to support introductory invention experiences for rural youth in Oregon.

Residential Invention Education Program
The residential Invention Education program was started Summer of 2021. We are currently partnering to facilitate three week-long residential camps at Oregon State University and two at OSU Cascades in Bend, OR. High School and Middle School youth will stay on OSU campus, and as a Mentor you will facilitate Invention Education activities and highlight the resources OSU has to offer future inventors and innovators. The OSU programs are being designed to support urban youth from Oregon, and introductory to intermediate invention education experiences. The residential programs average 20 youth per residential camp.
Youth as Inventors Program
This is a pilot program between the Hatfield Marine Science Center Innovation Lab (HMSC iLab) and Oregon State University program. This program starts online in May and culminates with an intensive residential program at the HMSC iLab June 15th, 16th, and 17th. The focus of this program is to have youth support the local “Blue Economy” by working with community partners to invent something to support their quality of life and/or economic interests. This program is designed for High School youth with an interest in technology, innovation, and community-driven inventions. This program will facilitate introductory to advanced invention education experiences for 10-20 youth. Travel to HMSC and lodging will be provided.

Spring Term Training
Training is three hours a week during spring term. The training will cover content, curriculum, and strategies for engaging youth from a variety of backgrounds. It is important that mentors outwardly express a welcoming presence in order to support all youth. We are there to position them for success as inventors.
